Another luscious bite…

I became my godmother Angie’s principal helper in the last years of her life. Among the minor emergencies that required my attention, maintaining the caramel stock was always high-priority. A caramel or two (or five, maybe?) was her nightly indulgence till the day she passed.

I never really had a particular thing for caramels until Hubby’s brother and wife introduced us to Red Kite salted caramels, (see A luscious bite of Red Kite). During COVID and several years afterward, when the vagaries of real life kept us home, we mail-ordered Red Kite caramels and toffee for holidays, gifts, and special treats. Also during that time, the Red Kite family opened its storefront in Hanover, New Hampshire. Via Instagram, I discovered that they’d started making ice cream, too. Does it surprise you, then, that the Red Kite Candy Store was on our “must” list when we finally were able to travel north last May? I think not.

We had met Mike McCabe and daughter Caila years before in their first retail outlet, at their candy factory in Bradford, Vermont. Although Elaine had taken some of our mail orders over the years, we had never met her. Pictured left with son Jack, Elaine is not only a very skilled candy-maker, but also a creative entrepreneur who is always looking for new ways to make people smile. We bought a good supply of caramels that day and sampled a new candy bar, but I confess that I couldn’t wait to try the ice cream. I just knew it would be exceptional. All I could think of at first taste was the ice cream I’d had years ago at Berthilon, the legendary Parisian glacier. Like the lyrics of a favorite song, some tastes stay with you forever.

Bottom line: If you find yourself anywhere in or near New Hampshire, you’re not very far from the Red Kite Candy store. You need to go there. Or shop online here. Not a bad idea with Easter coming up!

I’m sorry that Angie never tried a Red Kite salted caramel. But wouldn’t she enjoy a good laugh if she saw me having one after dinner in the evening, just like she did?

Yes, she is smiling. I will join Angie’s club because I have two chocolate covered caramels every night too. Currently they are from Trader Joe’s. However, now that you have given me new ideas, I will put that on my list for the next time I’m in Hanover which is about two hours northwest from home. Good chocolates are to be enjoyed. Thanks for the tip.

Isn’t this a nice story to read this morning?
I have a friend who make caramels and she gives them to us quite often!
They are delicious! Thank you for taking us along with you to this candy store. I wish we had tasting on our iPads.

By the way… if you ever travel North stop in Edinboro. We have a most fabulous chocolate shop. All the candy is made right there in the shop. So delicious! 😊
